- Is it really free?
- Yes — 3 texts a day, no account and no card. We cover the carrier cost because it is cheaper than an ad, and we would rather you tried the product than read about it.
- Do I need to sign up?
- No. Type a number, type a message, send. You only make an account when you want a number of your own.
- Can the person text me back?
- No. The message goes out from a number Dial shares between everyone using this page, so there is no inbox to deliver a reply to. Two-way texting needs a dedicated line, which is what the paid product is.
- Why can't I send a link?
- A free, anonymous channel that can put a link on a stranger's phone is a phishing tool, and the damage lands on the numbers we send from. Links, and anything that looks like one, are refused here. A paid line sends them normally.
- Why only US and Canadian numbers?
- International routes are where SMS fraud pays — attackers send to numbers they control in expensive destinations and take a cut of the termination fee. Restricting the demo to North America removes the incentive. Paid lines send worldwide.
- Why is the message capped at 131 characters?
- So each one fits in a single SMS segment. Emoji and typographic punctuation switch a text to a different encoding that holds less than half as much and bills double, so the demo sticks to plain characters.
- Which number will it come from?
- A shared one, and it changes. Everything is signed with a line saying it was sent free via payphone.wtf, so whoever receives it knows what it is. If you need a consistent number people recognise, that is a line of your own.
- Can I use this for marketing?
- No — 3 a day from a shared, reply-less number is a demo, not a channel. Payphone sells lines for that, including for industries most carriers refuse.
